Note: While The Singapore EDITION is one of our partner hotels where we can offer unique benefits, discounts, and VIP status, this review is written by us without any influence from the hotel, and all opinions are our own.

EDITION is one of the most trendy luxury hotel brands in the world right now. It is stylish, vibrant, sleek, tech-savvy, and luxurious. We have been long-time fans of other EDITION hotels around the world, such as The Barcelona EDITION, The Bodrum EDITION, and The Shanghai EDITION. In November 2023, The Singapore EDITION — one of Singapore’s newest luxury hotels — opened its doors, and we finally had the chance to visit. Before our visit, several of our clients stayed here and all were pleased with their experiences.

In this review, we will share everything you need to know about the experience and staying at The Singapore EDITION.

Introduction to the EDITION Brand & The Singapore EDITION

The EDITION brand is a collaboration between Ian Schrager, the hotel pioneer behind the iconic Studio 54 nightclub, and Marriott, one of the world’s largest hotel groups. This partnership merges Schrager’s signature blend of personalized, intimate, and unique hotel experiences with Marriott’s extensive experience in operating world-class luxury hotels.

EDITION redefines the traditional luxury hotel with a modern twist. The thing that sets EDITION apart is that the hotels often become destinations themselves, focusing heavily on great restaurants and trendy bars. They always adapt to the city and culture they are in, and it’s common for the hotel’s restaurants and bars to become just as popular with locals as with hotel guests. EDITION now spans the globe, with hotels like The New York EDITION, The Barcelona EDITION, and The Reykjavik EDITION.

The look and feel of EDITION hotels are characterized by a sophisticated, modern aesthetic. Signature design elements include clean lines, luxurious materials, neutral colors, and thoughtful design details that create a warm and inviting atmosphere. A lot of emphasis is placed on elegant design elements and greenery, blending indoor and outdoor environments. This iconic EDITION style is something you’ll recognize whether you visit EDITION in Singapore or Barcelona.

The Singapore EDITION is the latest addition to the prestigious brand and is its first hotel in Southeast Asia. The hotel is perfectly located on Orchard, within walking distance to Singapore’s best shopping at Orchard Road, dining experiences, and the UNESCO-listed Singapore Botanical Gardens.

Arrival at The Singapore EDITION & Check-In

Entrance to The Singapore EDITION with lush greenery and neutral colors

From the moment our car pulled up to the hotel, it felt distinctly like an EDITION. At the hotel entrance, we were greeted by lush greenery against the EDITION’s signature blend of neutral colors.

As soon as we arrived, the staff welcomed us with big smiles, quickly unloaded our bags from the car, and guided us to the check-in desk. In our opinion, check-in is a crucial process as it sets the tone for the entire stay.

Welcome drink, water bottle, and a cold towel upon arrival at The Singapore EDITION

We were welcomed with a non-alcoholic drink from the hotel’s cocktail bar, a bottle of water, and an ice-cold towel, which was greatly appreciated given the classic Singaporean heat and high humidity.

Since we booked our stay via Marriott STARS, the staff explained the benefits that were included in our stay. The STARS benefits at this hotel were breakfast for two, $100 hotel credit, early check-in, late checkout, an upgrade, and a welcome gift.

We were also informed that we had been upgraded from the room we had booked, a Superior King, to a Garden Premier King with a fantastic view of the hotel’s extensive garden.

Hotel common areas with plenty of greenery

On our way to our room, we passed by the hotel’s common areas, which featured abundant greenery. The common areas were always bustling with guests, but not in an overbearing way.

Rooms at The Singapore EDITION

The Singapore EDITION offers just over 200 rooms and suites. On the hotel’s website, you can get an overview of all room categories. The main difference between the rooms is the view. All rooms are spacious, with the smallest being around 40m2/430sqft. The rooms are modern and sleek, with a very digital feel. This means you can easily darken the room or control the lights with buttons by the bedside. The TV is also connected, allowing you to stream your own content via Chromecast. All rooms include housekeeping twice a day with evening turndown service.

We stayed in a Garden Premier King, which we really enjoyed. As the name suggests, the room features a view of the hotel’s expansive garden in the courtyard.

Let’s briefly go through the room layout. Upon entering, you’ll see a set of wardrobes with plenty of storage space. To the right is the large, sleek bathroom with a massive rain shower and bathtub. The hotel also features a Japanese toilet with a heated seat.

One of the best things about EDITION hotels is that they offer bath and skincare products from the luxurious brand Le Labo. Here, you’ll find large bottles of Le Labo shampoo, bath soap, and lotion.

In the bedroom, there is a King Size bed with controls for adjusting the room’s lighting and drawing the blackout curtains. What we really liked about the hotel is the multiple layers of blackout curtains, ensuring complete darkness. The bedroom is quite spacious, with a chair and a dining table.

On the table, there was also a lovely welcome gift of lemon curd tarts, cookies and fresh fruit, a benefit that we get as we made the booking through Marriott STARS.

The highlight of this room category is undoubtedly the view of the hotel’s courtyard, which feels more like a small botanical garden. We’ve tried to capture it in the image below.

View of the hotel's courtyard from the room

We really love the rooms at EDITION — the sleek oak floors, neutral colors, and large windows with pleasant views elevate the rooms to a new level. It will be interesting to see if the rooms remain fresh over time, as the downside of neutral colors and lots of white is that wear and tear become much more visible and harder to hide. For now, the rooms are brand new.

Food & Drink at The Singapore EDITION

A significant part of the EDITION brand is offering fantastic food and drink experiences that make the hotel’s restaurants as interesting for locals as they are for hotel guests. The Singapore EDITION is no exception. It’s worth noting that Singapore is a wonderful food city in general, and we believe the best food can be found at hawker centres and more casual restaurants. Therefore, we place slightly less emphasis on the hotel’s dining options than we might in other destinations.

The hotel features four different dining and drinking establishments:

  • FYSH is the hotel’s signature restaurant run by Australian celebrity chef Josh Niland. The concept here is a seafood steakhouse with a strong focus on sustainable seafood. This is also where breakfast is served, featuring an international breakfast concept.
  • PUNCH ROOM is the hotel’s signature bar with trendy decor and a focus on cocktails and light bites.
  • LOBBY BAR is the hotel’s lobby bar, which, like other EDITION hotels, serves as the hotel’s heart where guests and locals meet in a charming setting — also with a focus on drinks and light snacks.
  • THE ROOF is the hotel’s pool bar located on the rooftop, adjacent to their pool area. Here, they serve typical poolside fare such as light Asian appetizers.

Dinner at FYSH

FYSH, the hotel's signature seafood steakhouse restaurant

We dined at FYSH one evening to try the hotel’s signature restaurant. The concept is intriguing: a seafood steakhouse where they recreate many traditional steakhouse dishes using as much of the fish as possible, in line with their focus on sustainable fishing.

We sampled a variety of dishes during our visit. Unfortunately, many of the photos turned out quite dark due to the restaurant’s ambient lighting during dinner.

Three small dishes served at FYSH restaurant

We started with three different small dishes:

  • Dhufish Head Terrine Toast – A terrine made from an Australian whitefish, served with mustard and pickles
  • Dry-Aged Mooloolaba Yellowfin Tuna Tartare – A dry-aged tuna tartare served with crisps made from fish skin
  • Hokkaido Sea Urchin Crumpet – A sea urchin crumpet served with butter and chives

We found all the dishes to be tasty, but none stood out in terms of flavor depth. Of these dishes, we liked the tuna tartare the most.

Singaporean curry puff made with swordfish and yogurt sauce

Next was a twist on a classic Singaporean curry puff, an empanada made with swordfish and served with a spicy yogurt sauce. It was good, and the yogurt lifted the dish significantly.

Grilled Indonesian squid bolognese with tuna nduja

Next was the best dish of the evening. This was a take on a bolognese, made with grilled Indonesian squid and a tuna nduja. Normally, nduja is a spreadable salami made from pork and is quite spicy. We thought this dish was a 10/10. Mixing it like a bolognese allowed the flavors to meld beautifully, creating a flavor explosion. The squid was perfectly cooked, and the saltiness and heat from the nduja were the finishing touch.

Malaysian lobster with noodles in a rich lobster broth

We then had Malaysian lobster with noodles in a rich lobster broth. We thought this dish was okay, mainly because it had a very fishy taste, which we are not particularly fond of. This is a matter of personal preference.

Glazed swordfish with spiced carrot and hazelnut-date cream

Finally, we had the main course of the evening. It was a glazed swordfish, dry-aged for two weeks, served with spiced carrot and a hazelnut and date cream. On the side, we had one of the restaurant’s most popular side dishes – salt & vinegar onion rings. The swordfish was incredibly interesting in both flavor and texture, much like a nice piece of meat. Overall, this dish was very good.

Yuzushu Parfait with yogurt ice cream, mango sorbet, and yuzu cream

To finish, we had a Yuzushu Parfait – with a yogurt ice cream base, mango sorbet, and yuzu cream. Personally, we felt that the only flavor present was acidity without balance, so this dish was not a hit for us.

Overall, we found FYSH to be a pleasant restaurant and definitely worth a visit – mainly because the concept is different and it was fun to try a seafood-focused steakhouse. That said, we felt the food was a mixed bag – two dishes stood out for us, the squid and the swordfish main course. The other dishes were good but not exceptional. The service at the restaurant was very friendly and attentive. It was fun to try the restaurant, but it’s not a place we would revisit.

Breakfast at FYSH

Breakfast is also served at FYSH. You always get breakfast at EDITION if you book through Marriott STARS. We are big fans of Singapore EDITION’s breakfast. The concept is excellent. You get to choose two large dishes from an a-la-carte menu, and in addition to this, you can order unlimited drinks and also choose from a small but high-quality buffet.

We’ll start by going through the buffet – the selection was, as mentioned, quite small but a perfect complement to the a-la-carte menu.

There was a nice selection of very good bread and pastries. Our experience with hotel breakfasts across luxury hotels in Asia is that pastries often become a bit soft and not very crispy due to humidity, but everything we ate here, even the croissant, was crispy and fresh.

Additionally, there was smoked fish, which isn’t surprising given that FYSH is primarily a seafood restaurant. There was also fruit, nuts, granola, yogurt, simple salads, cheese, and charcuterie to choose from.

Below is the primary event at breakfast – the extensive a-la-carte menu:

You could choose two dishes per person from the menu and also order coffee and juices from the waitstaff. We tried a few different dishes during our stay and found them all to be very tasty.

Spicy beef noodles with tomatoes and avocado

We got to try their spicy beef noodles, along with a side of tomatoes and avocado. The noodles were delicious, with tender pieces of beef.

Steak and egg with chimichurri sauce

We also tried their steak & egg, which came with chimichurri, and the meat was perfectly cooked to medium. This was also very tasty after adding a pinch of salt.

Singaporean laksa with lobster, boiled egg, and bean sprouts

On another day, we tried their Singaporean laksa, a traditional dish served with lobster, boiled egg, and bean sprouts. This was also very good if you enjoy the laksa broth, which is made with lobster.

Black truffle omelette on grilled sourdough bread

Lastly, we tried their black truffle omelette on grilled sourdough bread. We found this to be the least exciting of all the dishes we ordered – quite simple in flavor, felt heavy, and lacked salt.

Overall, we were very satisfied with breakfast at The Singapore EDITION. The breakfast offerings were of very high quality, and we liked the option to order from an a-la-carte menu that had a wide range of tasty dishes. The only downside we found was that they did not offer barista coffee, and the coffee came from a machine. It still tasted quite good, but that was the only downside.

The Hotel Bars – Punch Room & Lobby Bar

Punch Room bar with trendy decor at The Singapore EDITION

The hotel features two trendy bars. The first is Punch Room, located on the ground floor in a hidden corridor, reminiscent of a “hidden speakeasy.” Here, they experiment with many cool and unusual cocktails, making it a perfect spot to visit before heading to dinner. Unfortunately, we didn’t have time to try a drink here, but we did pass by and thought it looked both cozy and cool.

The Lobby Bar with sleek neon pink lighting

In the lobby, we find the hotel’s second bar, The Lobby Bar, which serves as a hub for guests while also offering good drinks throughout the day. Here, too, a lot of effort has been put into the decor, with the bar illuminated in sleek neon pink.

What stands out to me about The Singapore EDITION is the strong focus on having a solid selection of both bars and restaurants. Many hotels have nice restaurants, but a big difference is that the environment at The Singapore EDITION is actually pleasant to hang out in, and the food and drink quality is quite high, definitely better than the average hotel. We thought the breakfast was fantastic, though the dinner could have been better. That said, Singapore is a fantastic food city, often best explored outside of hotel restaurants. So for us, EDITION still stands as a great option in Singapore – particularly if you enjoy nice bars to grab a drink at before or after dinner.

The Pool at The Singapore EDITION

The ROOF restaurant and pool area at The Singapore EDITION

On the top floor of the hotel, you’ll find The ROOF restaurant and the hotel’s pool area. The pool is open daily from 7 AM to 10 PM.

Spacious and inviting pool area on the hotel's rooftop

We sometimes find that city hotels have pools that are too small and often overcrowded. However, this was not a problem at the Singapore EDITION, as the pool was both large and there were always plenty of sun loungers available.

Complimentary sunscreen by the pool

A nice touch was the availability of complimentary sunscreen in case you forgot to bring your own.

The Singapore EDITION’s Gym

As the hotel is brand new, it also features an ultra-modern gym with the latest Technogym equipment.

Modern gym with the latest Technogym equipment

There were plenty of cardio machines, including ellipticals, treadmills, and bikes. All machines were the latest models and had features like streaming Netflix directly on the screen.

Modern gym with the latest Technogym equipment

There was also a wide range of machines and free weights available.

Gym area with free weights

In a separate room, there were also exercise balls and kettlebells available. In other words, you can easily get a thorough workout when staying at the Singapore EDITION.

Service at The Singapore EDITION

A hotel can be beautiful with lovely rooms, but if the service doesn’t match up, it falls flat. The service here is consistently friendly and thoughtful without being intrusive. EDITION as a brand is not about over-the-top service where someone is constantly hovering over you, but the service is correct, friendly, and it feels uncomplicated to stay here. Everyone at the hotel – from the restaurant waitstaff to the check-in personnel and housekeeping – always has a smile and is willing to help.

We were quite impressed with Singapore EDITION and can highly recommend the hotel to anyone looking for a modern luxury hotel in Singapore.
